Why Putting Your Clothes in Storage Might Not Be the End of the World

I'm of the rare breed who has a rather edited closet. Of course, if you ask my husband, he'll say I have more clothes than a department store -- but that's just because he hasn't seen my friends closets. And the piles of clothes they have lying around outside their closets.

We have better than decent closet space, a shared walk-in and a coat closet in the entryway. But with luggage, a vacuum, my husband's mountain biking paraphernalia (ok fine, and my collection of shoes), it seems there's just never quite enough room to stash our belongings.

Even with several years of New York City living under our belts and mastering creative storage solutions, I just can't seem to find enough space for all my precious pea coats. No matter how many times I try to fold clothes into even tinier squares, rotate suitcases and reorganize shoe racks, there's still an array of goods that gawk at me every time I set food inside the windowless cell.

With a few more coats than the average Californians and no need for them in the summer months, I'm about to give in to one of those new-agey apps called Clutter that seems a smidge too good to be true. I can't be bothered with self-storage lockers (hello, horror stories about floods, mold and moths!) but I'm willing to say goodbye to a portion of my wardrobe. God no, not for good!

With the tap of my finger I order a box, snap photos of the pieces I'm putting inside and then request they send someone who comes and makes the box disappear until I ask for it back. Sounds like a dream, right? We'll see. In the meantime I just have to think of it as having a butler and a basement. Only, I'm paying the butler way less than minimum wage ($10 a month per box) and I don't have to engage in awkward small talk.
