You’ve seen the bold new cut. You’ve speculated as to whether it was a wig. But until now, you’ve only been able to wonder why Jennifer Lawrence got a pixie. Luckily, she’s just answered the question on everyone’s mind: What’s up with the short hair?
“I don’t know, I cut it earlier, and it was just kind of like [shoulder-length] and it grew to that awkward, gross length, and I just kept putting it back in a bun, and I said, ‘Well I don’t want to do this,’ so I just cut it off,” the actress said during a Q&A at Yahoo Headquarters. “It just couldn’t get any uglier.”

While we would never put ‘ugly’ and ‘J.Law’ in the same sentence, we definitely applaud the star for having the confidence to go short. But Katniss Everdeen will not be following suit — the actress’s famous Hunger Games character will maintain her long braid in the final two films.
“This isn’t how Katniss is going to look in the next movie, don’t worry,” she said. “I’m wearing a wig [in the movies].” (Meanwhile, the movie’s wig stylist is furiously searching for a wig glue that will keep it on through Lawrence’s ferocious stunts.)
The actress debuted her pixie cut on her Facebook page Wednesday, seeming to love her slightly spiky new look. PEOPLE readers however, are more torn about it.
