Three Cool (and Challenging) Braids We Must Discuss

Braids have been white hot since the start of 2013, and the girlie hair trend shows no sign of slowing down. And just when we think we’ve said everything there is to say about plaits, along comes another one that’s worth a closer look.

This week alone, three A-listers stepped out with discussion-worthy locks with a high degree of difficulty (and a big payoff). Warning: These were done by professionals. Do not try at home without supervision. But if you do and nail it, we’re definitely going to need you to tweet us a photo @StyleWatchMag.

First up is Katy Perry, who accented her schoolgirl-inspired plaid outfit with a tightly woven crown of braids. They reminded us a bit of the “Valentino” braid we tried a few months ago, but with a double wrap that made them even more complicated.

Next (top right) is Eva Longoria, who defied our expectations of what a French braid pompadour might look like and turned it into something actually kind of chic (see it from all angles here). It appears her stylist started with a regular French at her hairline, then worked his way straight back, adding volume as he went, then pinning the high braid into a bun at the back.

Finally, Olivia Wilde gives us major tress envy with her silky-smooth Heidi braids, which offset a simple black dress. Unlike Katy’s, Olivia’s were braided as normal, then twisted up over the crown of her head and pinned in place. And somehow she makes two curled front tendrils look completely non-prom-y, which gets her a hair black belt in our book.

Which of these hairstyles would you most want to try? Or are you all braided out?
