In September, reports surfaced that Anthony Weiner exchanged sexts with a 15-year-old girl. Last Friday afternoon, FBI Director James Comey announced that the FBI had “learned of the existence of emails” the bureau had yet to investigate from Hillary Clinton’s private email server – shortly afterwards, it was revealed that the emails were discovered when they seized Weiner’s and estranged wife Huma Abedin’s electronic devices while investigating Weiner’s alleged underage sexting. The teenage girl at the center of the scandal – who is now 16 – has since come forward to criticize Comey.
Both the teenager and her father indicated to BuzzFeed News that the email news and its connection to Weiner’s sexting was made public – to their surprise – after she had apparently spent six hours that day on the phone being interviewed by FBI agents. Per BuzzFeed, “she feels aggrieved that the bureau gave her no warning that her case would be thrust into the national spotlight and tainted with electoral politics.”
“I was having self-esteem issues when this whole thing started with Anthony Weiner. Now as a result of my frailty, this could take down the United States presidential election. I mean, come on, who’s in charge of America?” she told them.
Her father said he was “angry that the local folks had interviewed my daughter for six hours that same day about intimate details from her previous interactions with a pervert and then released the story of Weiner’s server before we could drive home from the site where she was interviewed.” He also admitted that he thought the local FBI agents didn’t know that Comey’s announcement was coming.
“The FBI asked for me to speak to the media as little as possible. I have tried to stay quiet, but Comey has upset me,” the teenager said, explaining her reason for coming forward. “The last thing that I wanted was to have this become political propaganda.”
