Selena Gomez Says Her Hair Is a 'Crucial' Part of Her Show: 'I Wouldn't Even Know What to Do If I Pulled It Up'

Selena Gomez has been spending her summer on stages across the globe as part of her Revival tour, wearing custom sequin creations and whipping her hair back and forth better than anyone in the biz. And PeopleStyle was lucky enough to catch up with the Pantene ambassador in between shows, and it was basically 10 minutes in style and beauty heaven.

Below, the singer spills on everything from what’s in her dressing room to how it feels being the most followed person on Instagram (with the most liked photo of all time). Oh, and good news for all: She can’t keep her good hair tips to herself.

Your hair always looks amazing and effortless on stage. How do you care for it on tour?
“Marissa [Marino], my hairstylist, is awesome. I’ve known Marissa for five years — she has taught me all the little tiny tricks that are a little obvious and also things that are helpful. Like I actually don’t wash my hair every single night and that may sound gross, but it’s really unhealthy for your hair to wash it all the time. And my hair already goes through so much damage so I won’t wash it every night. She likes to use deep conditioners and obviously because I don’t wash my hair all the time she uses lighter products so it doesn’t go as crazy. The Air Spray by Pantene is so light and I usually just douse that all over my hair and I’ll flip it all around. My hair is such a crucial part of my show. I remember at some point somebody was asking, ‘Oh should we pull it up for a section on stage?’ And I was like. ‘I wouldn’t even know what to do if I pulled my hair up.’ I love how my hair feels when I’m on stage because of the fans and movement — it’s a part of my routine in a weird way.”

What’s the most surprising thing we’d find in your dressing room?
“I have a sweat bed. I usually get in it for 45 minutes to an hour, and I just sweat in this space suit looking thing which is really hilarious, and I look disgusting. But it’s also so good for you. It’s good to get out all the toxins. I did it at least three times a week before I left for tour. And then we brought it on the road as well because it makes me feel good. My skin feels great and it just gets out all the bad stuff.”

When you’re off-duty, what’s your hair and makeup motto?
“Oh barely anything. Unless we’re going out to some dinner with everybody. But literally all of us, all the girls and my backup dancers, we have our hair in a bun or a hat and maybe pig tails cause Marissa is so good at braids. So sometimes when I have a day off I’m like, can you braid my hair? No makeup. Just to relax a little bit.”

What are some of your travel essentials?
“Essential oils which are kind of my thing lately. I just love the way that everything can kind of consistently smell the same. Then I have my laptop because I never, ever go anywhere without it. I like having my own movies, my own TV shows. We just try to keep everything similar, so everywhere we go we kind of feel at home.”

Are you binge-watching anything right now?
The Big Bang Theory. I’m catching up on it.”

You created some fun fake tattoos for your tour and I know you have a few of your own. Would you ever consider getting another one?
“For sure. I don’t know what exactly. All of my tattoos definitely have a meaning to them. And I like how I can put them in subtle places so that they’re kind of a surprise to me even. I feel like I would maybe get kind of annoyed if they were in an obvious place. Just for me personally. I love tattoos. I think they’re amazing and beautiful. I always love to ask people what their tattoos mean to them or if they’re just for art. I have a fascination with them and I think they’re so fun. So yeah — I think I will get more for sure.”

What’s your favorite red carpet look that you’ve ever done?
“I definitely loved the AMAs last year. I wore this red, sparkly dress and my hair was really long. We put in these beautiful, longer extensions and it flowed with my hair but it was really long — like Cher long, which was so fun. I felt like a character in a way. I felt like a vixen it was fun.”

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
“At this point, what do they not know about me? Not to make it a serious answer, but I think people don’t realize how much I am aware of everything, kind of in control of everything. I’m not very obvious with my presence towards running my business and running my empire and making decisions. I want to be able to inspire people and connect with people so. I don’t know if anything, I don’t know if people really know that side of me.”

What’s the biggest fashion risk you’ve ever taken?
“I like to just trust people you like working with and collaborating with, like Nicolas [Ghesquière] at Louis Vuitton. If he wants me to wear some cool, weird look, like some fun, chunky boots at Met Ball, I was just excited to try something different. I think with fashion, one of my favorite qualities about it is that you really don’t have to stick to anything. I’m very classic. I love to keep my look very clean and simple but every now and then it’s just fun to have moments where you can collaborate with people who are really beautiful and have a very specific reason why they create the clothes they create.”

What’s the best beauty tip you’ve traded with your famous squad?
“I do share Shape House. I’ve taken a few of my friends there to try the sweat beds, just because it really does help your skin and it really helps kind of your body get out everything. I’ve shared that a lot. As far as products, I actually love trying all different kinds of things. So I like to keep my face very clean. I’m always about just doing random mud masks or have a night of just doing that with my girls. I feel like I’m very easy when it comes to that stuff. I also really like putting lotion on my feet and then putting socks over it for a few hours because it makes your feet really soft.”

How does it feel to be the most followed person on Instagram?
“I don’t know it’s weird! It wasn’t my goal. I wasn’t like ‘I wanna do this!’ It’s so funny to me cause I had Instagram when it first started. I remember when I was like, ‘Oh, what is this? I wanna download it and I wanna try it.’ Ever since then I don’t think I’ve ever thought of it as anything other than what it’s for. I deleted it for a while, because I needed a break. I enjoy being able to share what I think is cool.”
