When it comes to dressing for award shows, Sofia Vergara has learned what works best for her body type. “I wear [form-fitting] because when you have boobs, you look weird in something baggy,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “It doesn’t lay flat, and then you look pregnant!”

Among her choices for the SAG Awards was a red Donna Karan Atelier gown, “which I’d wanted to wear for a long time because I loved the color,” Vergara says. The deciding factor? Fiancé Joe Manganiello. “Joe loved it,” she adds. “I showed him my options and he helped me pick.”

The Modern Family star accessorized with jewelry from her own Kay Jewelers line (in addition to her new engagement ring, which she showed off in the mani cam). “I picked these blue topaz with diamond earrings and a bracelet that I loved,” she says. “I was excited when I saw the pieces because I thought, Wow, I can wear these on the red carpet.”

And despite not winning for best ensemble in a comedy series, Vergara, 42, celebrated at the PEOPLE/Entertainment Industry Foundation’s gala immediately following the ceremony with her entire cast. “There’s great food and drinks and Modern Family always has a table,” she says. “You try to make the night memorable.”
