Red Carpet Trend Report: The Shoes We’re Seeing Everywhere – and the Ones to Kick to the Curb

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we realized that this week, we could stop talking about shoes — both the heels we’re dying to wear and the ones that are starting to feel a little, well, flat.

Up: Slim golden sandals. Though Julianne Hough’s dress isn’t faring too well with PEOPLE StyleWatchers right now, we’re pretty sure her killer gold heels are keeping the ratings artificially high — they’re just that cute. Also benefiting from the undeniable sex appeal of these barely-there metallic sandals this week: Padma Lakshmi, Taylor Swift and Louise Roe. And us, as soon as we can get our hands on a pair this weekend.

Up: Classic pointy pumps in bold colors and designs. Another trend we’re itching to add to our shoe collection: Single-sole, pointy pumps in the bold hues, prints and metallics we saw on a veritable Who’s Who of Hollywood. It would be faster to list the stars who didn’t sport a pair of the classic silhouette in a head-turning style this week! However, we had to give Style Council member Ashley Madekwe special props for her surprising grape punctuation to an eggplant outfit at New York Fashion Week, plus Reese Witherspoon‘s surprising grass-green pair and Dianna Agron’s stripes.

Down: Super-chunky platforms. Scarlett Johansson, the short ladies in the office totally feel your need for a few extra inches in the height department. Which is why we regret to inform you that this seen-everywhere-in-2012 style is officially in its death throes. ’90s platform sneakers are the on-trend way to add some height, while stacked pumps feel a little dated. Quick: Mentally swap out her clunky heels for one of the other pairs we’re loving this week. Wasn’t that refreshing?
