Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Winter White, Sleek Side-Parts and Retiring the Flowy Maxi Dresses

Trend report: winter white, side-parted hairstylesRex USA; AP; Getty

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed white is the true color of the season, an easy-to-crib hairstyle gaining momentum and the one dress that needs to be packed away for next spring.

Up: Winter White. What we’ve learned from the red carpet this week: Buy a winter-white party cocktail dress to wear to holiday parties. Hollywood went glam in the crisp color with the Duchess of Cambridge making our jaws drop once again in a long-sleeve Roland Mouret gown (with a Zara necklace!) at the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom premiere in London. Kim Kardashian kept up with her pre-wedding all-white wardrobe in a white lace Proenza Schouler design with an asymmetrical cutout that showed off her cleavage (shocker!). And Evangeline Lilly selected a Catherine Deane halter gown with an embroidered halter top and flowing pleated bottom for the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in Hollywood.

Up: Side parts. You know side parts are having a major moment when the Queen of the Center Part Gwyneth Paltrow decides to switch things up. PEOPLE StyleWatch editors were left speechless when Goop stepped out at the British Fashion Awards in London with her platinum blonde strands parted to one side. Following suit was Amy Adams with her pin-straight side-swept style at the American Hustle L.A. screening and Kim Kardashian wore a slicked down side-parted style at Surface magazine’s DesignDialogues in Miami.

Down: Flowy maxi dresses. We love a good maxi. But his week Julianne Hough‘s billowy black design (worn to the boohoo.com viewing party for Beyoncé’s L.A concert) felt off-season compared to the cocktail-party ready looks stars were sporting. So we think it’s time to pack these styles away until next spring.
