Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Black and White, Velvet and Neon-on-Neon (in the Fall?!)

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed black and white happening in a big way, velvet in unexpected pieces and one super-bright look that missed the mark.

Up: Black and White. This color palette keeps popping up on the red carpet. And this week, stars did the classic combo in a very chic, graphic way. Allison Williams led the pack in a colorblock halter gown at the Exploring the Arts Gala in N.Y.C. The most fashionable teen celeb in the biz, Hailee Steinfeld (okay she’s tied with Kiernan Shipka), wore geometric-print Thakoon Addition separates at an Ender’s Game photocall in London — a bold finish to her black-and-white promo tour style. And rounding out the group, Avril Lavigne threw us all for a loop in an unexpectedly restrained peplum colorblock Basler design at the Huading Image Awards in Macao, China.

Up: Velvet. The luxe fabric has slowly been gaining momentum in Hollywood (remember Connie Britton’s Naeem Khan Emmys dress?) and it appears it’s only going to become more popular. Our Celeb Style Council member Nikki Reed teamed her velvety navy topper with skinnies, a white top and bright-red pumps at the Swim for Relief benefit in N.Y.C. In the eveningwear department, Jennifer Lopez showed off her caliente curves in a burgundy velvet-paneled Zuhair Murad stunner at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in D.C. And stars even accessorized with the fall-ready fabric: Christina Hendricks wwore a forest green bejeweled headband and matching clutch at the Uno de 50 party in L.A., and Natasha Lyonne sported a blue velvet top-handle bag to the Exploring the Arts Gala in N.Y.C.

Down: Neon-on-Neon. Yes, Kristin Cavallari usually has spot-on style sense. (She just made our Love Her Outfit gallery for this awesome look we can’t wait to replicate!) That’s why we were surprised to see her step out in highlighter-bright separates at an ULTA and Breast Cancer Research Foundation event in Chicago. We’re all about supporting the cause in pink, but the star’s neon color combo is made for 90-degree days in the summer. (Plus the button-down blouse and flare-hem mini reminds us of something we wore to a college mixer.) We’re all for color, but it’s time to stow the neons and reach for richer hues.
