In response to a 60 percent increase in sexual assaults in Hong Kong during the first quarter of 2013, the city’s security secretary urged women to drink less. “Some of these cases … involved the victims being raped after drinking quite a lot of alcohol,” Lai Tung-kwok said at a press briefing yesterday, according to The Wall Street Journal. “So I would appeal that young ladies should not drink too much.” Local women’s groups said the sharp increase may be the result of more women reporting their assaults (the city recently hosted a SlutWalk) and worry that the secretary’s comments will discourage women from continuing to do so, especially when alcohol was involved. It's worked pretty well in other countries.
