Met Gala 2014: The Stars Who Played it Safe (Bordering on Snoozy)

A Charles James-themed Met Gala was supposed to mean sweeping ballgowns, architectural bodices, glamorous embellishments and elegant, feminine draping. What it doesn’t typically indicate is simple day dresses and minimalist lines. So we have to give these stars a grade of Z (as in Zzzzz) for punting on what could have been an opportunity for something super gorgeous.

From left, we’ve got Elizabeth Olsen in an ice skater-inspired Miu Miu design with illusion tulle along the neckline, fingerless wristlets, a puckering jeweled bodice and contrasting yellow-and-red sandals. Cute for a daytime photocall, but not terrible inspiring for a glamorous event like this one. Next up is Rachel McAdams in a perfectly pretty blush strapless dress and loose locks that are just fine, but not really in keeping with the over-the-top loveliness that James inspired.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a Balmain dress (a similar style of which was recently seen on Kim Kardashian). Said the supermodel of the swingy mini, “I love leopard, I love black, I love painted and I love gold so … ” (we suppose that explains why she didn’t go with the theme?). And finally, the face of Louis Vuitton, Michelle Williams, wore a design by the line that would look equally as adorable picking her daughter up from school, plus minimal hair, makeup and accessories. Cute dress, but wrong occasion in our estimation.

Do you think these ladies should have stepped it up or are these dresses perfect?
