Met Gala 2014: Are We Sure the Theme Wasn't 'Crop Tops?'

Charles James was a highly meticulous designer known for his enormous, elaborate and over-the-top glamorous gowns that were made to be worn to the fanciest balls on either side of the Atlantic. So we can’t say we expected the interpretations of his style at this year’s Met Gala to include wide swaths of skin. But plenty of stars — from those as demure as Anna Kendrick to those as wild as Cara Delevingne (both not pictured) — chose to expose their midriffs while paying homage to the designer.

From left, Anne Hathaway bared a tiny sliver of belly in her crimson Calvin Klein Collection two-piece gown with a structured bodice, paired with Vhernier gems and a matching red lip. Emma Stone continued with the Valentine’s hues in a pink-and-red Thakoon number that kept the abs minimally bare but exposed a little more skin via the side slit. A loose side braid completed the relaxed look.

Gabrielle Union, meanwhile, went for all-out glam (and all-out abs) in a head-to-toe Prada look with maximum embellishment — the feathered, fringed and jewel-encrusted midi skirt balanced the swatch of skin bared above. And finally, surprising no one, Rihanna turned heads (and possibly snapped necks) in a Stella McCartney two-piece creation with an almost completely bare back (see it here), plus a 116-carat Jacob & Co. diamond choker.

While we frankly think each of these stars is rocking the look in her own way, we have to admit, we wish we could hear what the famously fussy designer had to say about these liberal interpretations of his work. Are you into the crop tops? Wish they’d gone more glam? Tell us below!
