Frequently, when Lady Gaga hits the red carpet — or walks to dinner, or goes to the drugstore — we can’t imagine what inspired her outfit. (See: Virtually every photo here.) But at the American Music Awards, it was slightly more obvious where she might have come up with the idea for her white-”horse” red carpet entrance: It came straight from her Versace ads, which hit the web Sunday morning.
Rumors of Gaga starring in Versace’s spring campaign had been swirling for some time. The star has been spotted out wearing one Versace look after another, and fans may recognize a track on her Artpop album as a tribute to the line’s glamorous designer (that would be “Donatella”). But you know Gaga wouldn’t just let a major announcement like that leak with a press release. The only way to properly announce her partnership with the design house was to ride a human horse into the AMAs in an outfit she pulled straight from the photoshoot.

Of course, she made some modifications — her red carpet gown had a flowing lilac skirt and different embellishments from the look above — but the message came through clear. And Versace seems to be just as thrilled with the partnership as Gaga is. In a press release, the company says of her ads: “In the images, Lady Gaga appears as her divine and glamorous self, reclining on luxurious furniture, her long hair Versace platinum blonde. The campaign shows how Lady Gaga completely captures the Versace essence: creative, experimental, fearless.”

The photos, shot by famed fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, show the superstar carrying the line’s new “Palazzo” bag and channeling her good friend Donatella both in tan and attitude. Says the designer herself, “I am honoured that my friend Lady Gaga is the face of our new Versace campaign. I wanted to capture her true beauty and spirit in images that are elegant and alluring. She is like family to me, the embodiment of the Versace DNA.”
What do you think of Gaga’s AMA outfit, lifted right from her Versace ad? Is she a great new face for the line?
