An intruder was shot multiple times Friday morning, including in the head, after hopping the fence at supermodel Miranda Kerr‘s California home and being confronted by a security guard, TMZ reports.
The security guard was also hospitalized after being stabbed, according to the site. Kerr, 33, was away from her home — in Malibu, California — at the time.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office declined to confirm to PEOPLE that Kerr’s home was the site of the incident. But the spokesman did confirm an identical incident at a Malibu home, reported about 11:10 a.m. Friday, when an intruder was shot after being confronted by a security guard.
The intruder, a male, “was confronted by a security guard” at the home after coming over a wall on the property, the sheriff’s spokesman says.
“Then a fight ensued, and the intruder produced a knife and attempted to slash the security guard in the face.”
The spokesman says the guard, also male, sustained some wounds to his face. TMZ reports the guard was stabbed in the eye by the intruder.
“The security guard drew a weapon and fired three to four rounds, hitting the suspect in the face and upper torso area,” the spokesman tells PEOPLE.
Both people were hospitalized and are expected to survive.
The sheriff’s spokesman says the guard and intruder were the only two people on the property at the time and that the incident was first reported by someone nearby who heard gunshots.
“It’s kind of a crazy thing to happen out here in Malibu,” one neighbor told KTLA. “I guess it happens everywhere but we just don’t ever have it happen in our neighborhood.”
The intruder will be charged, the spokesman says, but information about the possible charges was not immediately available. Investigators remain on the scene, and the intruder’s motives in sneaking onto the property are under review.
Kerr, who shares a 5-year-old son with ex-husband Orlando Bloom, recently opened up about her beloved Malibu mansion.
She told Harper’s Bazaar in its September issue, “I knew that this house was it at first sight. It needed a lot of work, but it had a great view.”
