For as long as I can remember, I was self-conscious to put on a bathing suit and head to the beach. I would wear clothes with as much coverage as possible in order to hide my body from whoever might be silently judging me. But over time, I realized that nobody else's opinions of me should even matter. Weighing my body down with oversize swim shorts and full-coverage tankini tops is just not practical when it comes to trying to stay afloat in the water or get some sun. When I finally learned how to gain the confidence to hang out by the pool without hiding behind a big hat and pair of oversize shades, I gained an unfamiliar sense of freedom.
