When Penelope Cruz sat down with British Vogue to discuss Giorgio Armani's costume designs for Ridley Scott's The Counselor, the conversation quickly went south - as in shoes. When asked how the clothing choices affected her character, Penelope revealed, "It's always important to have enough time with the costume department . . . if I have the wrong shoes for the character, it can really stop me from where I need to get emotionally." Just how important is her footwear? "Sometimes even more than the clothes, it's about the shoes."
On the subject of clothes, there's much to look forward to there, namely a red Armani dress. She explains (with a possible spoiler), "[It] was really set around the red color for that moment and how expressive that was, because once that character is dead, you see that body again wearing that dress."
She describes having Armani create the costumes as a "privilege," but we suspect she didn't have too difficult a time convincing him to come onboard. The two, it turns out, aren't only collaborators, but friends. When asked to recount her all-time favorite Armani memory (and there have been many) she lists an intimate lunch that they had in Paris when she first connected to the hard-working designer. Of her longtime confidant, she explains, "Maybe people that don't know him, don't know how hard he works . . . far as he's gotten and how successful he is, he still has so much respect for the work." And it's that work we'll be looking forward to seeing when The Counselor hits theaters Oct. 25.
