Zöe Saldana is reviving a bit ’90s beauty trend. The actress, 38, just made a pretty serious case for blue shadow. Saldana recently wore a gorgeous (and quite modern) rendition of the icy blue shadow (not like the kind that haunts all of our yearbook photos) for the premiere of Star Trek Beyond in San Diego on Wednesday. And lucky for us, her makeup artist of seven years, Vera Steimberg, is here to break down the look and offer a few tips and tricks on how to wear the statement shadow.
The “sophisticated, sensual and beautiful” look, as Steimberg describes it, was originally inspired by the star’s textured ice blue Givenchy Haute Couture midi dress, but came to fruition after a collaborative effort by both the pro and Saldana.
“The look we achieved was a collaboration,” Steimberg tells PeopleStyle. “Zoe loves having a story behind a look and also loves to try new things, so she helps a lot during the process and also gives different ideas for us to test.”

And for this makeup moment, because Steimberg loves playing up the star’s eyes, the pro decided a stand-out shadow was the best way to accentuate Saldana’s eyes while also complementing the gorgeous Givenchy design.
“We wanted to add color to her face, but we really weren’t trying to match the dress color,” says the pro. “[We wanted a] blue that was close to the dress that wouldn’t clash: a soft and icy blue, which made her eyes pop with that hint of color. Plus, it photographed well!”

To get the icy shadow look, Steimberg contoured the actress’s eyes using a pearlescent blue eyeliner (like L’Oreal Paris Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Cobalt Blue) inside the rim of the eye, and then applied “a hint” of two separate shades of blue eye shadow (like L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Midnight Blue and L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Infinite Sky) on the eyelids.
Steimberg then lined the lash lines with black eyeliner (like L’Oréal Paris’ HiP High Intensity Pigments Color Truth Eyeliner) and finished with “tons” (a.k.a. a few coats) of mascara to make the eyes really pop.
