Anna Wintour's Career Advice: Everyone Should Get Fired At Least Once

Take that pink slip and love it!

Anna Wintour dished out career advice inside Alastair Campbell's new book, Winners: And How They Succeed, and here's the most surprising (and sobering) tip Vogue's editor-in-chief shared: Get fired.

"Everyone should be sacked at least once in their career because perfection doesn't exist," Wintour, 65, told the author. "It's important to have setbacks, because that is the reality of life."

And yes, even the style doyenne has gotten the boot before. In 1975, Wintour was fired from her position as a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar—after only nine months on the job.

Clearly, losing one job didn't hurt her in the long run: Wintour went on to work for New York magazine, House & Garden, and British Vogue before grabbing the top position at the American fashion bible, a role she's held since 1988.

Naturally, the Brit, who is also Conde Nast's artistic director, had more wise words to share. Wintour stressed the importance of delegating tasks. "People work better when they have responsibility," she said.

And don't underestimate the power of faking it 'til you make it. "Even if you aren't sure of yourself, pretend that you are, because it makes it clearer for everyone else. Most people prevaricate," the mother to Bee Shaffer, 27, shared. "I decide fast. I think it's helpful to people who work for you. The world we are in is about instinct and being fast and responding."
