Allison McGevna of Inside Allie’s World on How to Shop For (And Style!) High-Waisted Flares

Allison McGevna, 31, of is our resident curvy-girl style blogger, and she contributes her thoughts on finding the perfect outfit to the site each week. This week, she dishes on how to nail the trendiest looks of the season while still flattering your figure. (And if her items are sold out, we’ve linked to similar styles below — happy shopping!)

Flared jeans. Sigh. Where do I even start? Flared denim seems to be one of those trends that pops up every few years, and this year, they’re back in an enormous way. I think it’s a result of the ’70s trend that’s so huge right now — every designer has them and every girl I know is out there trying to find the perfect pair.

As I’ve discussed before, finding trendy pieces for curvy girls can be a bit challenging. You’re going to find bell bottoms in most straight-sized stores like H&M, Topshop and Zara, but it’s really great when a plus-size brand does contemporary fashion. Simply Be, for example, does it really well. It’s my go-to site for denim. (The jeans always fit me, and they’re so true to size!) I’m wearing the brand’s flares in this look, and I’m completely obsessed with them.

With flared jeans, no matter your shape or size, it’s always good to make sure they’re a little bit longer. You want them to cover your heel (we’ll get to that part), but not completely — just the tip should be showing. This particular pair is great because it has a hint of stretch, so it holds you in. (Which is important if you’re self-conscious about your mid-section.) The trick is to go for a streamlined silhouette. I know some women who layer Spanx that go all the way down to the ankles under their jeans, but I prefer to look for denim that’s thicker and stretchier. That way I can just throw them on and be comfortable. No worries.

As for this crop top, I think it’s perfect with these jeans. Crop tops can be tricky to style, but Charlotte Russe is a great resource for plus-size girls. (That’s where I got mine.) The brand just came out with their plus line and it’s amazing, not to mention incredibly affordable. Just remember: Juniors’ sizing tends to run smaller, so plan to go up one size.

That said, it’s fun to be able to wear these trendy pieces. This crop top works because it has a slightly longer length to it. It’s still cropped, but it gives you coverage. I prefer to wear them without showing any skin — so it hits just below the waistband — but don’t be scared to show a peek of tummy if you want! My last piece of advice: Since crop tops won’t be in forever, I wouldn’t invest a lot of money in them. This one was less than $15.

Now that we’ve talked about fit, let’s move on to footwear. High-waisted flares should really only be worn with substantial heels. No matter how tall or short you are, nobody looks good in flats and flares. It’s like a throwback to junior high — everyone regrets that trend! With heels, flared denim has an elongating effect, which is super-flattering. These are a great pair from French Connection. They’re affordable and good quality. (The brand also has great sales, so keep an eye out for them!)
