They were all dressed up with no place to go.
34 tuxedoed cats and kittens were abandoned in cardboard boxes outside the Marin Humane Society in the middle of the night on Sunday — the fifth time in the past four years that this has happened there, the shelter says in a press release.
The kitties are believed to be from the same group of people who’ve abandoned cats at MHS four previous times.
Footage taken from security cameras and shared on Facebook shows a vehicle pulling up to the shelter and three individuals offloading the boxes of cats. As in the past, a note was left on one of the boxes asking the shelter to find them homes, the shelter said, adding that identifying information — like a license plate — is not clear in the footage.
“No one will be held liable or be in trouble for abandoning the cats but we’re hopeful the responsible party will get in touch with us to provide needed information,” spokesperson Lisa Bloch said. “While we’re grateful the kitties are safe with us, we want to find out who’s responsible for the over-breeding so we can offer assistance for any cats remaining and for the people involved. If left unaltered, cats can be prolific breeders.”
Due to the influx of cats, the MHS “is extremely busy vaccinating, microchipping, spaying/neutering, and medically and behaviorally evaluating these 34 cats in addition to its already full shelter.” The shelter is waiving the adoption fee for all adult cats until the end of September.
Prepping these cats for adoption can cost at least $500 each, the shelter said. To help them care for the kitties, click here to donate. If you donate at least $500, you can name one of the cats.
