Justine Kay: Drugstore Beauty Products For Us Brown Girls

I love myself a budget-friendly buy, but because of my deep, coral-y, yellow-ish undertones, I have a hard time finding makeup products that match my skin tone. After many years of trial and error, I've accumulated drugstore beauty products that work perfectly for us brown girls. Here are my favorites and some recent discoveries.

Foundations and concealers made for deep skin tones tend to be too reddish on my skin. (My color in MAC Cosmetics foundation is NC50 and my concealer is NC45.) Most brands make one or two shades -- usually named after syrup flavors like mocha or caramel -- neither of those work for me. That is, until the CoverGirl Queen Collection came out. This collection has plenty of shades for dark-skinned women available at the drugstore.

CoverGirl Queen Collection All Day Flawless Foundation, $10, target.com

With my summer tan and budget in hand, I found the All Day Flawless Foundation from the Covergirl Queen Collection. First off, I'm a girl that likes great packaging, so this foundation was a winner for me; a pump and a cap? Sold. The shade "soft copper" -- I appreciated the glamorous metallic reference -- works perfectly for me. It also lasts all day and pretty flawlessly with a good primer underneath. Tip: To find your correct foundation color at the drugstore, bring your usual foundation with you and get color matched at the counter.

CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer, $7, drugstore.com

Also from the CoverGirl Queen Collection, (thank you Queen Latifah!), the Natural Hue Bronzer in Ebony (120) has been a staple in my makeup kit for years. This bronzer is the exact match of a natural bronze-y glow. I haven't heard of many other companies making bronzer for deep skin tones, and the only other in the drugstore is by IMAN Cosmetics. It also works as a natural contour powder.

Sleek Face Contour Kit, $9, sleekmakeup.com

The Sleek Face Contour Kit in Dark is the opposite of a natural contour powder. If you want that famous Kardashian sculpted cheekbone, some well-placed concealer and this matte powder will certainly do it. The contour powder is amazing as an eyeshadow shade in the crease of your eye, and the golden highlighter it comes with is also very pretty on darker skin. With polished black packaging and a huge mirror, this product is perfect for any on-the-go makeup bag. For less than a ten bucks, it's a great deal for a contour and highlighting powder.

Neutrogena Shine Control Primer, $14, walgreens.com

These products are nothing on my skin without the Neutrogena Shine Control Primer. Honestly, I can't even wear makeup without the stuff, since it just slides off my oily skin. When I say oily, I'm not joking; there's enough oil on my skin for this Jersey girl to make it all the way down the turnpike. This primer from Neutrogena keeps my oily skin at bay for at least eight hours, and keeps my makeup in flawless condition.

Jordana FabuBrow Eyebrow Pencil, $3, kmart.com

Now I told you I have a summer tan, right? This next product, the Jordana FabuBrow Eyebrow Pencil in Deep Brown creates a nice shape, and stays put through an entire workout session. Waxy consistency? Check. Spooley brush on the end to groom untamed brow hairs? Check. Budget-friendly? Absolutely -- at three dollars, this pencil is a bargain.

Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner, $8, target.com

The last product I have to share with you is one of my favorites because it's a dupe (that's beauty guru speak for duplicate) for the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. I used the Bobbi Brown liner for years, and it was the first gel liner I'd ever tried. Then I discovered the Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner in Black and never looked back. This liner has the exact same consistency as the Bobbi Brown formula, and it's as black and matte as you'll get out of a gel eyeliner. It also lasts all day and night -- you definitely need to double cleanse if you want to get this off -- and with the right brush, you can easily create a cat-eye.
